Country EV landscape
India’s EV charging infrastructure is still nascent, with only 458 total stations recorded across 16 cities, a figure that underscores the gap between ambition and deployment. Delhi leads with 130 stations, offering the highest density of any Indian city, yet this remains modest for a metropolis of over 20 million people. Bangalore (52 stations), Kochi (47), Pune (38), and Kolkata (17) follow, but coverage outside these hubs is thin, limiting long-distance travel. The 63 routes mapped reflect a network that is largely urban and fragmented. Dominant public operators include Tata Power, Statiq, and ChargeZone, though private workplace and home charging still carry the bulk of demand due to the hot climate, which can reduce battery efficiency and increase reliance on frequent top-ups. The absence of a reported EV count further indicates that data collection is immature. For drivers, station density in Delhi is roughly one per 150,000 residents, while in Kolkata it is one per 250,000, making route planning essential. Without a national fast-charging corridor, intercity travel remains challenging, and the network’s growth will need to accelerate significantly to support India’s electrification targets.
