Sapporo’s EV charging readiness is limited for its population of 1.97 million. With only 18 charging stations across the city, daily driving for EV owners would require careful planning, as the sparse network cannot support widespread spontaneous use. The seven planned routes connecting Sapporo to other destinations offer some reassurance for longer trips, but the low station count suggests that intra-city travel is the primary challenge. Sapporo’s normal climate does not significantly degrade battery range, which is a relative advantage compared to colder regions. However, the near-zero estimated EV count indicates that infrastructure development is still in its infancy, and the current station density is insufficient to encourage mass adoption. Without a rapid expansion of public charging points, residents would likely rely on home charging for routine commutes, making the city’s readiness for a full EV transition notably low.
